OUR ENERGY-DEPOSITION-BASED DRAG-REDUCTION APPROACH OFFERS NEW AERODYNAMIC BENEFITS, SUCH AS MITIGATED SONIC BOOM AND ENHANCED LIFT, STABILITY, AND CONTROL AUTHORITY. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE FOR THIS FOLLOW-ON RESEARCH IS TO ESTABLISH THE EFFECT OF SPATIALLY EXTENDED LASER-PRODUCED PLASMA FILAMENTS ON LASER-INITIATED, HIGH-VOLTAGE (HV) ENERGY DEPOSITION UNDER ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS RELEVANT TO AERODYNAMIC APPLICATIONS. IN OUR PREVIOUS WORK STUDYING LASER-INITIATED ENERGY DEPOSITION, WE DEMONSTRATED LARGE REDUCTIONS IN THE THRESHOLD VOLTAGE FOR ELECTRICAL BREAKDOWN (U50) OF AN AIR GAP BETWEEN TWO ELECTRODES AND FOUND THAT THE REDUCTION IN U50 WAS HIGHEST (40-50%) WHEN THE LASER-PRODUCED PLASMA SPANNED A SIGNIFICANT FRACTION OF THE AIR GAP. HOWEVER, THE MAXIMUM PLASMA LENGTH WAS LIMITED BY THE PARTICULAR ULTRASHORT PULSED LASER (USPL) USED IN THAT EXPERIMENT, THUS CONSTRAINING THE AIR GAP SIZES THAT COULD BE BROKEN DOWN ELECTRICALLY, EVEN WITH LASER INITIATION. WITH THE HIGHER-ENERGY ULTRASHORT LASER PULSES AND PULSEBURST CAPABILITY (10-100 TIMES GREATER PULSE ENERGY, EITHER AS A SINGLE PULSE OR AS UP TO FOUR PULSES IN A PULSE BURST, SEPARATED BY ~11NS EACH) COMING ONLINE AT PM&AM RESEARCH, WE PROPOSE TO EXTEND OUR TUBE-EXPANSION STUDY OF LASER-INITIATED ENERGY DEPOSITION TO LONGER, MORE OPERATIONALLY FLEXIBLE LENGTHS.
